Welcome to my Flixster profile page. I'm KJ and I adore movies. I am very happily married to fellow Flixster user-MOE . He usually writes much better reviews than myself. Though we don't make many trips to the cinema, we spend lots of time watching movies on DVD. We recently upgraded our equipment and found new joy in home movie viewing. Adding an HDTV, Blu-Ray player, up-converting DVD player and 7.1 surround sound have made home movie watching almost ideal. (Almost since we don't have space for a projector and a really big screen...) IMHO, anyone who makes watching movies at home a true hobby should upgrade to a minimum 42" HDTV, a Blu-ray player and surround sound. You will not be disappointed.

Please share your movie reviews/recommendations with me. I enjoy reading different opinions on films. Sometimes my decision to see or not to see a film may be swayed by an honest review.

The Dark Knight The Dark Knight PG-13 5.0 Stars
Once upon a time, Batman Begins was my all time favorite Batman movie. Not anymore... Enter The Dark Knight----PHENOMENAL!!!

It is rare that a much hyped film lives up to or surpasses that hype. TDK more than equals all the hype presented months leading up to its release. With much anticipation and high expectations, this film delivered all I wanted and more.

Plot details are best left for viewing, but if you truly listen to the dialogue in TDK, you will understand that from a comic book genre film, a masterpiece has arisen. Christopher Nolan has perfected the art of putting the comic book on screen. Jonathan Nolan has written a script which knows no boundaries.

Christian Bale is Batman. Bale captures Batman/Bruce Wayne in a way no actor before him ever could. Oldham, Morgan, and Caine reprise their respective roles from Batman Begins and add great flavor to the film. Eckhart shines as Harvey Dent and Gyllenhall is a nice replacement as Rachel Dawes. The chemistry between all the actors help Nolan create a world which works beautifully.

Heath Ledger- the Joker...WOW ... mere words cannot describe what Ledger brought to this character. The level to which Ledger took the Joker is almost incomprehensible. No comparison to those who have played the role before as it would be like comparing apples to oranges. Ledger owns the Joker, and most likely no one will ever take that ownership away. Anyone would be foolish to even attempt. Ledger's performance alone is enough reason for anyone to see this film. Will he receive an Oscar nod? He should for this is one of the most brilliant roles ever portrayed on screen.

The plot, the acting, the directing, and the cinematography are blended seamlessly in TDK. The film is easily the best film of 2008 to date. The action and drama, the darkness of the film itself all make this much, much more than a comic book adaptation. This is the must see film of the decade.

The Tracey Fragments The Tracey Fragments R No rating.
This is one I must give zero stars. As great as Ellen Page may be and as intense as the storyline was, I just could not stand the film styling. The continuous disjointed screens quickly ebbed away what interest I had in the plot. I had to pull it out of the DVD player.
Blood Diamond Blood Diamond R 4.0 Stars
I rated and reviewed this film over a year ago. Suddenly my review is gone and I find the movie marked as I want to see. Weird...

The movie is quite good and very intense. Decaprio was superb. Hounsou was outstanding. Connelly filled the bill. I did find the film a bit more political than I'd have preferred, but it was shot and directed beautifully.
My Blueberry Nights My Blueberry Nights PG-13 1.5 Stars
Kar Wai Wong failed to make My Blueberry Nights work. With a script that has more holes than a much used shooting target, a storyline that never reaches fruition, the talented stars couldn't even work the characters enough to bring the film to life. The shooting style is unique and pleasing enough, but other than the scenes between Weisz and Strathairn's characters, the movie just fails miserably. Jude Law is his usual cute self, but his character just doesn't have enough meat or screen time to make the film work. The movie seems extremely long and is very slow moving and downright boring. Wong truly failed this time around. Avoid this film.....
The Other Boleyn Girl The Other Boleyn Girl PG-13 4.0 Stars
While I can't speak for the historical accuracy of this film, I can say it was quite enjoyable and led me to research the monarchy from the Tudor period. Whether it was due to viewing this film on Blu-ray or not, I found the color palette beautiful and pleasing. The cinematography and costuming were eye catching. I haven't read the book, but I found the film enthralling, intense, and satisfying. Eric Bana surprised me as Heny VIII and I was impressed with his portrayal. Portman and Johansson were stunning. Well worth a watch if you enjoy period films.
In Bruges In Bruges R 4.5 Stars
Irish playwright Martin McDonagh has written and directed a brilliant film. Kudos to Mr. McDonagh for his most unique story. The mood and contrast between the lead characters (superbly portrayed by Farrell and Gleeson) worked on so many levels, and you can't walk away from this film without caring for them. The humor, the sensitivity, and the moral complexity of this film weave together to make an almost perfect drama/comedy. The Bruges setting is shot fabulously for the storyline. This first film from Martin McDonagh is impressive in the extreme. In Bruges may truly be my favorite black comedy of all time.

Just knowing this is a true story is enough. You can't help but feel the anguish of the troops as they fight for survival in Somalia. You'll cry and cheer as the survivors make their way out.... Considering the length of the book, this is a great adaptation. This is most likely the best Josh Harnett film available.
American History X 2. American History X R 5.0 Stars
Ed Norton's best! A powerful story told beautifully about a young man whose journey into and out of the Neo-Nazi movement grabs hold of the viewer and doesn't let go. Be warned- there is no happy ending to this film. One of the best films ever made.....
Northfork 3. Northfork PG-13 5.0 Stars
One of the most visually beautiful movies I have ever seen. The cast could not have been better selected. The Polish brothers (Michael & Mark) have written the gem of the century with Northfork. The movie is filled with symbolism and some of the most delightful dialogue ever filmed. This is a must see for any true movie buff. For others, it may not impress. Watch with an open mind and an open heart...
Enemy of the State 4. Enemy of the State R 5.0 Stars
If this film doesn't provoke you into thinking about "big brother" nothing will... Gripping, fast paced, realistic (especially in the world we know today), superb acting.... This film is all about being under government surveillance and it's too relevant to ignore. Will Smith and Gene Hackman are the stars, but the supporting cast list is top notch- Gabriel Byrne, Ian Hart, Barry Pepper, Jake Busey, Jack Black, Jaime Kennedy, Jason Lee, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore and Jason Robards. Who's watching you???? Conspiracy theorists, this is a must see for you.
Across the Universe 5. Across the Universe PG-13 5.0 Stars
If you ever enjoyed music by the Beatles, like to be visually entertained, and can just suspend reality for a bit, you will be engrossed by Across The Universe. There are such diverse reviews of this masterpiece by Julie Taymor, but I was blown away. Musicals aren't my 'cup of tea', but this one just comes together. The characters are delightful, the songs blend right into the script and the romantic story is very touching.
Little Miss Sunshine 6. Little Miss Sunshine R 5.0 Stars
I loved this film! Each character is perfectly flawed, dysfunctional and loveable. They are so loveable. From laughter to tears and back again, this film hooks you from the beginning and doesn't stop until it's reeled you all the way in at the finish. I haven't laughed so freely with a film in a long time. This is true comedy. Stellar performances from Breslin, Arkin, Kinnear, Carell, Collette and Dano!! Dano and Breslin stole the show for me. Charming, delightful, funny, dark, emotional--- what a joyride of a film. This is one for the DVD collection.

    Hi, Totally agree on the Dark Knight. I've seen it twice and I find myself longing for more! Will there be a third? Will it have Cat Woman or Riddler??? Who?

    Biggest q though is how can the Joker return? Who would even want to step in those shoes?

    I never bought an laser discs, I just remember thinking how ridiculous it was that they cost $80 - 100, haha.

    Colin Farrell's character in In Bruges was brilliant. We were laughing so hard when he called the three american tourists elephants.

    I try not to do it as much anymore, but sometimes the worst things just slip out of my mouth, hahaha ;)

    Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckart, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman.

    << "You see, madness is like gravity, all it takes is a little...push" >>

    The story follows Batman a year after his accounter with Ra's Al Ghul and his thugs, the streets remain the same and Batman continues to do what he can with the help of newly appointed Commissioner, Jim Gordon and Gotham's new D.A, Harvey Dent. Before long a menacing madman called the Joker introduces something into Gotham that no one would have ever expected.

    This is no doubt the hundredth review you have read on this film, massively hype for years by fans and recently by the general public, reviews have been pouring in by the bucketload...my review is simply just a reminder, from both an obsessed fan and a general moviegoer, that this film is beyond anyones expectations, especially mine and that it simply is outstanding.

    Everything about the first film is simply raised in level here, everything seems to be in a new direction, yet never forgetting what made Begins so great. Christopher Nolan has always been my favorite director and he has simply proved it here by a mile. To many it might appear flashy that he has taken hold of the newest technology for the film with IMAX cameras etc and in the wrong hands it would have just been for show, but Nolan is god behind these cameras and the epic scope is deftly handled and perfectly assured, the man is long overdue to be recognised more...and Wally Pfeister simply dazzles with the assured tone on this epic scale, it adds such a lovely feel.

    The Nolan brothers screenplay is simply remarkable and again, 'beyond' everything I expected from the film. I was one of the men who knew the film was going to be more than just a Batman film, the footage I saw showed it, the dialogue rang true of it and as I am no doubt repeating in this review, its more than you would ever expect. In Batman 89, the problem that feel on it was the fact that the storytelling was lax and Joker became a first rate character over Batman, who simply became third rate. Begins proved that Batman and Bruce Wayne can be powerful forces and complex humans and faces and TDK continues that power by adding so much more. Morally complex from every angle, its a perfect crime saga under the superhero cover. Each character is given special treatment and in one word, a 'soul'. Bruce Wayne must now face the facts of Rachael being with another man, especially the one appointed as the challenger to Batmans moral values on Gotham. Joker is never given a major origin story and thank god for that, because the direction of Nolans vision didn't need it. He's unrelenting, mysterious much like Batman yet so self destructive and simply one hell of a scary, menacing clown that promises anarchy and chaos.

    I can't go on without mentioning something highly underlooked in films...the score. It is the first soundtrack I would have ever bothered to sit down and listen to throughout and for good reason. Its a rich force that blends beautifully with the complexities of the films morals and emotions, beautifully adding richness to every epic scene on screen, its up there as one of the greatest pieces of music I've heard that can add so much to the moving image.

    You all knew I was getting to this...the performances. Christian Bale once again proves to be the greatest mix put on screen for these characters. As Bruce Wayne, he continues to show the charming and cheeky wit around the way he is seen in city, yet remains so human and battles the strong emotions with others as we all do. Aaron Eckhart simply blew me away, especially when everyone goes in for Heath. He's perfect...there I said it and easily blows Tommy Lee off the face of the earth. He's got the perfect charisma to play this all american man as D.A of a major city and really is a nice threat for Bruce in his personal life, because he is not only similiar in statue as the force of Gotham, but he has won Rachael over, who no doubt sees him as Bruce without the mask...and when Harvey changes into who he is destined to become, Aaron is scary as hell and really is compelling. Maggie Gyllenhaal is a great replacement over the horribly wooden Katie Holmes and is given more to work with this time around and she blends in just well....AND of course Heath Ledger. What more can I say that no one has already said? Many still believe an posthurmous Oscar win would be a sympathy vote, the truth is, if the man was still alive today, he would still win it for what is quite possibly the greatest villian to ever grace celluloid...and that will be argued. Equally unexpecting and expecting, his performance as the Joker will stand for a lifetime. Sure Ceaser and Jack will always have a face for Joker as the showman style of the character, but Heath is the dark side everyone knows from a 50+ year old character. Charismatic, dark, edgy and scary as all fucking hell, he breezes into every scene easily stealing it and delivering something so intense, so unexpected, yet so real. Its a performance to be remembered by someone who died so suddenly and whether or not he wins the truly deserved Oscar, he's already in the hall of fame in my eyes.

    The Dark Knight is a fucking masterpiece. To be, of course as 'opinion', because no one can stand as being right, it is the greatest film I have ever seen and blew my obsessive and very high expectations right out of the water. Moral complex, beautifully captured, deftly controlled, greatly performed...simply great. I still can't say that the film is 'flawless', because I still believe no film can or ever will, but The Dark Knight comes damn close.

    << "You see, nobody panics when things go according to plan. Even if the plan is horrifying. If I told people that a gangbanger was going to get shot, or a busload of soldiers was going to get blown up, nobody would panic. It's all part of the plan. But tell people that one tiny little mayor is going to die and everyone loses their minds!" >>

    This is the French and Belgians doing what they do best. It's quirky, visually inventive, exhilarating and emotionally challenging storytelling.

    True.

    We caught this Movie late at night, never heard or read about it before. I aint gonna say what my Husband thinks about this Movie.
    After the Movie GIDEON!
    I never thought any Movie will ever touch my Heart. This Movie so heartwarming. You laugh and you ll cry.
    French tend to make Movies too Dramatic, but this was different.
    Many people had problem with the End. The End was really frustrating and they added that song. I cried my eyes off.
    The song is about " love for a Mother." Very Intense and touching.
    Comparing this to Rain Man, Rain man looks sillier.
    The Eighth Day (Le Huitième jour)Recommendable for the ones, who sometimes enjoy Dramatic European Movies. We watched it in French, but I guess it has English Subtitle, if you get it on DVD. Definitely worth watching.

    OK, I know I had originally decided I didn;t want to see this film but I changed my mind.

    And it's pretty decent for what it is. Yes, there are definitely a lot of "funny parts" that just aren't funny (like what was the deal with Bill Murray in the tree?), but I did laugh enough to be mostly satisfied.

    I still see Hathaway as a one-trick pony who gets parts for her looks and by playing characters with personalities so close to what I imagine is her own.

    Most of you will wait for the DVD. No need to rush out.

    I had passed this up many times thinking it would be just another fantasy but it's more then that. HArdly any fantasy in it at all but one you'll have to watch to judge for yourself.

    Mckellen does a very good job in this and the supporting cast helps with everything.

    I was so incredibly pleasantly surprised by this movie. I watched it only because of its popularity. I like to watch all the classics, even though more often than not, I dont care for them half as much as most ppl. But, I like to know what ppl are talking about. I thought Ferris Bueller would be just another 80s teen movie. Was I ever wrong! This movie is so much fun, and I am actually a little sad that I didnt watch it a long time ago. Ferris is an incredible character. You gotta love him.

    It doesn't dissappoint. I was worried with all the hype that there was gonna be huge dissappointment walking out of the theater but there was none.

    This looks and feels nothing like a comic book based film and I'm glad. I think the movies are overflowing with them right now and this is a nice change.

    The acting was good. Eckhart was great as Dent, Bale, of course as batman. The highlight though is Ledger and I have to say that he was brilliantly disturbing. Need to see it for yourself to understand the lengths he went for this role. There is no distinction between Ledger and Joker, it just is Joker.

    With that said, I do suggest watching this and you will have a good time.

    Pretty watchable movie.
    And quite easy to review also.

    Wanna bet?

    - Sudden zombie boom;
    - film students catching zombies on camera;
    - zombies roaming around all over the place;
    - film students running away from zombies while catching them on camera;
    - normal people turning into zombies;
    - film students witnessing normal people turn into zombies while catching them on camera;
    - ...

    ... And so on and so forth.

    It's not a great film, as you may suspect already, but it isn't all that bad either.
    The amateur camera work adds a nice touch to it. Makes it feel a little different from other zombie movies and a bit more realistic.
    As far as realism can go in this genre, that is.
    But, yeah, the directing style helped the rating a great deal. And considering that I only gave it 3 stars... You can imagine how it isn't such a must-see movie.
    Watch it only if you have a tendency for enjoying movies with an amateur filming style.

    If you don't, then there's a pretty good chance you'll hate it.

    And if, on top of that, you don't usually tend to care for regular zombie movies all that much either... Then there's a pretty good chance you'll end up slitting your wrists halfway through it.

    This was so much better than "Batman begins". Heath ledger made the Joker scary edgy, and insane. He was the best Joker yet to grace the Batman movies. Loved his "magic trick" on entrance to the film which let's you know exactly what you are dealing with when it comes to the Joker. Sadly, it will be his last great performance in a film. I am still not sold on Christian Bale as Batman. His "Batman voice" is unconvincing and fake sounding. Bale does much better playing "Bruce Wayne" than "Batman". I loved both Maggie Gyllenhaal and Aaron Eckhart....they had good chemistry together. I also like that Cillian Murphy repraised his role as "The Scarecrow" for a few scenes. I am glad they didn't forget about his character and it shows that they probably would have brought the Joker back in future films but Ledger's death has thrown that into "who knows?" territory. The reference to the body armour of Batman being "cat resistant" makes me wonder if Catwoman will make an appearance in the next film. Overall, a great film and definitely one of the better Batman movies.
    One of the best Batman movies so far. R.I.P. Heath Ledger, your presence in this film made me realize yet again how much your talent will be missed.
