Robert Clayton Dean: Who's them?
Brill: Do they know me?
Robert Clayton Dean: I don't know what you're talking about.
Brill: Either you are very smart or... incredibly stupid.
A techno action thriller from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott, who uses his visual flair to brighten things even more. It's also smarter than the usual Bruckheimer action film which is nice, and it still has the entertaining fun factor, as well as mixed cast to keep things lively.
Will Smith plays a different character from his usual save the world persona, but still has enough charisma to spare, despite his character being pushed to his limits.
The story involves a lawyer, Robert Dean played by Smith, being passed a recording of a politician's murder by another, without Robert's knowledge. Despite not knowing what he has, Robert has now been targeted by the NSA as a threat, and they try to do everything they can to ruin his life and find out what he knows.
Gene Hackman eventually shows up as an older version of his character from The Conversation basically, working as a sort of underground hacker and surveillance expert, and the movie sort of has fun with how that life could have played out.
The rest of this movie is packed with character actors, including Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore, Loren Dean, Barry Pepper, Jake Busey, Gabriel Byrne, Jack Black, Jaime Kennedy, Seth Green, Jason Lee, Regina King, Lisa Bonet, Philip Baker Hall, and Jason Robards.
The direction, editing, and cinematography is all top notch, working with the satellite surveillance theme. We get all kinds of crazy shots that would fuel the kind of privacy paranoia that many people worry about.
As an action film, it works in a good enough manner. Opting for mostly chase scenarios, opposed to gun fights, it certainly works in leaving its hero character as an every man. Speaking of which, Smith really does a good job at keeping his character human. He plays a lawyer, with a wife and son who has had his own past marital problems involving another women as well as dealing with issues involving his job.
Overall, the movie does a good job at being both a big studio picture and a clever thriller.
Robert Dean: What the hell is happening?
Brill: I blew up the building.
Robert Dean: Why?
Brill: Because you made a phone call.
I was surprised how well Will Smith and Gene Hackman worked together in the film. Gave it 3 stars for good action sequences and good acting.
Another movie about the little man being targeted by the government (the pigs inside who try to get to the top even if it means killing innocent people). Lucky us Will Smith knows how to take the garbage out, even if it doesn't look like it in the beginning.
I liked the story, the action and the actors- great work!
Also, the movie has good camera work for a '99th movie.
It packs action-movie cliches but I like it! Perhaps due to the likability of Will Smith and the whole ordinary guy trying to prove his innocence. I'm a sucker for those kind of films. And yes, it bears all the trademarks of Tony Scott.
Fantastic Thriller with a Fantastic Cast! Smith and Hackman are incredible (as always) and Voight is the perfect bad guy. The plot is exciting and at the same time intriguing and Scott's direction is flawless. highly recommended.
Decent thriller with Will Smith as Robert Clayton Dean, a lawyer who is unknowingly hiding a copyed file of a congressmans assasination in one his bags after bumping into an old college friend while christmas shopping.Certain parties in the FBI,namely those involved in the congressmans murder, need to get the file back so they pretty much hack into his life and have him followed everywhere.Deans house and clothes are bugged, his bank cards wiped so he can't use them and it seems this normally happy family mans life is ruined. But when he meets an ally in Gene Hackman it seems he might be able to sort things out and get his life back.Despite being a bit overlong, this is mostly entertaining stuff and makes you think about how mich info the goverment and other organisations have on us and how far they'd go to obtain information.Plus with a cast including Jon Voight, Jack Black and Seth Green, along with Smith and Hackman you can't really go wrong.Well,ya could but fortunately this doesn't!

intelligent fast paced action film that questions the modern fears that raged around the technonolgy at the turn of the millenium and continue to spark debate today. The stroy is solid and the scrpit is very witty , thanks to some good casting and well acted set pieces this is a very enjoyable (if a little long) example of clever modern cinema.
I have never seen this action and anxiety in a movie before...Being constantly awake until the very last minute!
A solid action movie - good pace, intelligent story and very good soundtrack. Don't like Will Smith that much, but Gene Hackman and Jon Voight save the movie.
There aren't many movies I can't manage to sit through - hell, it looks like I'll even make it to the end of Stallone's "Get Carter"! - but I gave up on this one, roughly about the time that Jon Voight and Jack Black started hypothesising about a mysterious bulge in Will Smith's shopping bag. Is it a piece of incriminating data??? A piece of high-concept bullshit, more like.
Great suspense movie. My step-dad was checking the house looking for "bugs" in the smoke detector. This movie helps you look at things in a different way than you did before...the thought of being watched that closely.
More Tony Scott quick cuts and hand-held film-making. Another of those movies that don't hold up under close examination.
this movie is freakin amazing, everything about this film is brilliant, the plot twists are unexpected, the acting is superb, the suspense is killer, and the cast is amazing. The ending is quite brilliant, and the directing is phenomenal as expected from a master such as Tony Scott
I saw this for free thank God and i was bored out of my mind.Seriously i like a lot of Tony Scott's films like Last Boy Scout and Man On Fire but damn this one sucks. Not a good movie...
this movie was really good. i only watched lik the last half of it but i completely got everything that was going on.
While not a big conspiracy guy, the acting and storyline is great. Takes you through a reluctant ride kicking and screaming and makes it quite believable.
One of my favorite Will Smith flicks. Thrilling and suspenseful throughout. Definitely a good watch.
They make America as if they have the resources to monitor anyone, anywhere at any time! But I like that kind of movies.
Big brother is everywhere. Though the case in question is over-emphazised, it can happen when public servants trespass the boundaries of office.
Caught my attention as I was flipping through channels and saw it on TV. I missed the very beginning but I caught on to what was happening. I've forgotten a lot of it already but I liked the cat. =) It seemed to be not too bad but I dunno. maybe someday I should try to see it again from the start and pay better attention.
wow what a great thriller movie...this is really enjoyable 2 watch...i think that tony scott does an amazing job of directing this mystery suspense thriller movie really well because he keeps the viewers on the edge's of your seat throughout because you never know what 2 expect from this movie this is really enjoyable 2 watch n its got loads of good actors throughout n that will smith was brilliant as the lead role of this movie cuz he pulls it of perfectly in this movie...i think that jack black is still a great comedy actor n he's a talented musician as well because hes in tenacios d :D:D
